ARTs BUDDIES
Powering Artistic Collaboration Among Generations
Powering Artistic Collaboration Among Generations
Elderly patients and those exhibiting mild dementia who live in assisted living environments often feel excluded by the outside world. Such isolation brings on the deterioration of mental and creative capacities. It has long been observed that engaging in the arts stimulates natural connections, upregulates happiness, and enables the elderly to remain active in the process of creation. Art Buddies create art in a very special way, through one-on-one sessions in which each resident, collaborates with us on the artistic details and creative messaging he or she would like to see in their paintings. The young artist then takes that instruction and, with the physical help of the resident, creates the watercolor, oil, or acrylic painting that their art buddy envisions. Together we create the scene on the canvas as the resident guides one of our team artists in the desired palette and images. By the end, of an ArtsBuddies session, each senior resident had an original painting!
specific ways in which art can be beneficial for Elderly:
Mental stimulation: Engaging in art activities can help to stimulate the brain and keep it active. This can work toward preventing cognitive decline and may even improve cognitive function.
Physical activity: Many art activities, such as painting, drawing, and sculpture, involve using fine motor skills, which can help to improve hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
Emotional well-being: Creating art can be a therapeutic and calming activity that can help to reduce stress and anxiety. It can also provide a sense of purpose and accomplishment, which can boost self-esteem and overall well-being.
Social interaction: Participating in art activities can provide opportunities for older people to connect with others and form new friendships. This can help to combat loneliness and social isolation, which are common issues among older people
